When the recession hit Las Vegas, it was electronic dance music (EDM)—not just residency stars like Celine Dion—that ushered in throngs of young Vegas-goers and offered the city’s nightlife a chance at reinvention. DJs like Calvin Harris now get paid top dollar to fly in and play the hottest clubs, while the EDM festival Electric Daisy Carnival has become one of the city’s top-earning events. A new episode of Noisey, the music documentary series on Vice Media’s new television network, Viceland, airing Tuesday at 10 p.m. EST explores just how Vegas became what many are calling “the EDM of capital of America.” (If not the world—watch out, Ibiza).
Created by Andy Capper and hosted by Zach Goldbaum, Noisey explores the music scene of different city in each episode, from Compton to Sao Paolo. In Tuesday’s episode, the show heads to the City of Sin to interview Vegas stars both new (Tiësto and Steve Angello) and old (Wayne Newton) about what sets the town apart—and runs into Justin Bieber, who scored an EDM hit of his own last summer, along the way. See him take the stage for “Where Are Ü Now” in the clip above.
