YouTuber Marques Brownlee’s in-depth reviews of coveted high-tech gadgets have made him a one-man Consumer Reports for a new generation. The 31-year-old New Jersey native, known professionally as MKBHD (short for his initials and “high-definition”), has a knack for untangling complex tech concepts for a broad audience. Whether the professional ultimate frisbee player turned creator is breaking down the problem with ultra-thin smartphones or sharing his first impressions of the Nintendo Switch 2 released in June, his 20 million YouTube subscribers trust him to do their due diligence for them. And he does it in style, too: Brownlee’s videos—which he began posting back in 2009 as a high-schooler—are as entertaining as they are informative. (Five years into Brownlee’s creator career, Vic Gundotra, then a senior vice president at Google, had anointed him “the best technology reviewer on the planet right now.”)
Today, Brownlee, who also hosts the tech podcast Waveform, runs one of the most-subscribed gadget-focused channels on YouTube. But he’s no longer just reviewing products—he’s also designing them. As chief creative partner at Ridge, a wallet and accessories company, he recently launched a line of tech gadgets and accessories.
